What has been your "it's my time to shine" moment?

Not mine. My brother's.

We were in New Orleans for a bachelor party, and the night is young. So we're not totally shitty yet. We're walking down the street from one bar to the next, and this motorcycle comes flying down the street and nails this minivan right in the back driver side door.

People are already on their way over to gawk, when I hear footsteps behind me. I turn to see my brother run by me towards the accident, looking right at me, cigarette in mouth, drink in hand, and a big smile on his face. At first I thought he was sprinting to gawk also (kinda messed up right!?). Well he wasn't.

He had actually just earned his EMT license a month or two prior, and had been working as an ER tech.

Now before this (and still now sort of), he had a reputation as one of the bigger party animals of the group. The fact that he got the EMT license wasn't met with a lot of fan fair or anything, because he's still, ya know, party Sean. Well that changed.

Our five closest friends and I watched as he ran up to the situation and yelled out over everyone in his best "I am Wiesel!" voice "Clear a path! I am EMT!" Then he crouches next toe the motorcyclist, and just went to town, giving out orders and shit.

"You!. Call 911. Tell them this intersection!" - to the lady with her phone out

"You two! Move this bike. Just enough to get it off of him." - to the guys standing by the bike

"You! Is everyone okay in there?!" - to the people in the van

"You! Pull my pants up!" - to the guy standing behind him (he's shy and his plumbers crack was showing)

"You stay down. You've just had an accident. You may feel fine, but you need to wait for the ambo to check on you. You might have messed up your neck." - to the motorcyclist

The guy really didn't want to comply, but I guess Sean acting all authoritative convinced the guy to comply. He held the guys neck in place until the ambulance arrived and they got the c-spine (or whatever you call it) on the guy.

In the end it wasn't a bad accident by any means. I'm guessing no totalled vehicles. The people in the van were fine. Sean, and the paramedic who arrived on scene both agreed the motorcyclist was very likely going to be fine also.

So it wasn't a life or death situation by any stretch, but it was probably the most impressive thing that any of the guys had ever seen party Sean do. He's a paramedic now working at the fire station he's been talking about working at since before puberty. I've very proud of him.
