What do you do to feel safe when walking alone at night?

I have had quite a few scary scenarios, I live in a place where there are really rough areas (not as bad as it used to be). One I don’t want to go into detail however to stop what was happening I punched the assailants. What’s worse was there were female police officers over the road and they didn’t do anything (to be fair maybe they didn’t see however I have no idea how they didn’t). My “friends” didn’t help me. It made me realise you have to learn to protect yourself as not everyone will help u. I don’t carry weapons however this why due to varied health issues I drive places. I try to have an eco friendly car and think about the environment, however, unless I know I can carry something legally to protect myself I’m not doing it.

Another one I was about 9 yrs old, with my sister that was about 5 yrs old and my grandmother. We were walking to the school bingo that was on in the evening. A young man was following us and it was very sketchy. My grandmother was very fragile and picked up the pace. I kept talking rubbish about martial arts (I wasn’t doing that at the point however just saw I had to protect them). We got nearer the school which was well lit - the guy stopped and turned around.
