What is everyones opinion on health insurance in Australia?

I don't understand how the private system only has a % of all resident's signed up across tens of different providers and turns massive profits.

Surely if we abolished (lets face it practically mandatory private health for higher income earners) and just paid the medicare levy, the entire the health care system would run more efficiently?

They turn massive profits because they continually lean on the public system when they decide certain things are too expensive to insure...so you are getting less and less for your money and the public system gets more and more backed up and used anyway...

Wouldn't the $100 million be better off in a not for profit public health system than 100 million in private health that skims profits off that cash....

Can someone provide me with a logical reason why we need PHI over fully funded public system?
