I had a goblin assassin called Grim Gomez.

Gomez was one of many in an army of goblins who served a trio of evil Sorcerers known only to the goblins as "The Masters". He had been bred for servitude and to begin with was as loyal as a dog, completely indoctrinated to serve until death. Only a few goblins had been lucky enough to ever meet the sorcerers and it was his hope that with his skills he could rise to such an honoured station. This was a trait shared by many and frequently as soon as it seemed a goblin was favoured, he would be murdered in his sleep. This created an aura of paranoia and mistrust for all in the army.

Gomez attained a proficiency in poisons and regularly inoculated himself against them, much to the amazement of his comrades.They would point at him and call him Grim Gomez and say that with his lazy eye he kept one eye on the look out and one looking for his next target. Soon he was among the most hated and would spend so much time making sure he didn't die that he had hardly any time to do anything to noteworthy for promotion. His situation made him frustrated; He was a veteran murderer with the rank of a grunt.

Then one day, rather suddenly, The Masters turned on each other. The army split into three factions and a short, chaotic civil war which lasted just over a fortnight broke out. By the end, the Masters had died and only those skilled or lucky had survived and their numbers were few.

The battle had left Gomez with an existential crisis. He felt that his whole life had being pointless. Later he grew angry at the senseless deaths of his kinsmen, at the callous disregard his masters had for goblin life and most of all at his blind subservience to further the goals of someone else . His rage grew in him as he remembered all the faces of the comrades he had killed.

He vowed he would serve himself from that day on and that where he could, he would improve the living conditions of all goblins. No longer would goblin-kind be a slave race.
