What industry is a lot shadier than it seems?

Luxoticca owns most of the global optical market. They own 3 of the 4 best selling sun glass brands (Ray-Ban, Oakley, and Costa del Mar) and have been attempting to purchase Maui Jim for years. They own most well known opthalmic brands as well. A few examples are Oliver people's, Coach, Prada, Tiffany&co, Armani, Versace, Polo, Ralph Lauren, and many more. You may know some of their store brands, LensCrafters, Ilori, Pearle Vision, Target Optical, Sunglass Hut, etc. It's all the same company. They have 9,126 stores as of 2018 according to Google. Earlier this year they purchased grandvision, who has an additional 7,000 locations giving them global dominance in the optical market place. If you don't play nice with their requests, they'll drop your product from their stores.

They also merged with Essilor, the world's largest lense manufacturer. And own EyeMed one of the largest vision insurance company in the United states. Due to all of this, they can make glasses whatever price they want. Most frames only cost <5$ to produce. Same with lenses, my store pays 7.14$ for single vision polycarbonate lenses, but we sell them for 189$. The mark up is huge. A pair of glasses routinely will run you 500-1300$ at my store, while typically the material cost will be less than 50$ to produce.

Oh and like most enormous companies, they treat their staff like shit. We record every purchase you make, and are encouraged to push to to purchase an equally expensive or more expensive pair at your next visit. don't forget coating and material upgrades, tints, warranties, and second pairs. Sales goals are held above all else. If your revenue goal is 10% growth, but you only get 8% growth during a month, you'll be reprimanded. You'll need to write daily reports on your sales goals, and explain why you did t meet your target, and what you will do to adjust. It's not good enough to make the same amount of money as you did last year, linear growth is expected. If you can't get those results, they'll replace you with someone who can.
