There is a retired footballer called Ashley Cole, who was a decent player with a good career for Arsenal, Chelsea and England. He is more famous to some for marrying singer Cheryl (was Cole, now Tweedy).

In his auto-biography, he revealed some information about his contract negotiations with Arsenal. He claimed he was driving when he heard that they had only offered him £65k a week, instead of the £70k he wanted. In his own words, this almost caused him to swerve off the road in shock.

This story was presented as if Arsenal fans were meant to sympathise with his view, and take his side against those mean club owners. He was offered £65k a week, which is a fortune for 99.99999% of Arsenal fans, so to claim the offer is an 'insult' and hope to have them on your side. That was pretty lacking in self-awareness in my opinion.
