What’s a family secret you didn’t get told until you were older that made things finally make sense?

For some reason my aunt never visited or associated with my grandparents, her parents. I always used to wonder about it but never touched on it because I gathered it was a taboo subject. I later found out that my aunt and my grandparents had a really bad relationship, my grandmother would beat my aunt over little mistakes and didn't want to pay for her college tuition for a more prestigious school. Since then my aunt left the family and survived on her own. At first I thought my grandparents were completely in the wrong but after time I've noticed that my aunt doesn't have the greatest personality and a bad relationship between her and my grandparents is pretty understandable. I also learned that my grandfather who I adored and favored more than my grandmother is actually an abusive manipulative man who's been stepping all over my grandmother for the 70 years they've been married. My grandma used to complain about being beaten and I didn't believe it because she was also in a state of dementia. Later though we found my grandmothers old diaries where she detailed all the times my grandfather abused or cheated on her. As I grew up I began to realize my grandfather's true colors, his shady actions and despicable behavior. I'm just really grateful that my dad grew up to be such a kind and understanding man despite his childhood.
