I was in New Orleans with a friend who grew up there, visiting his family. One day on our way out of the house, his mom gave us each a banana for the road. I am allergic to bananas, so when we got to a stop at the bottom of a highway off-ramp, and a guy came up to the car asking for change, I went "I don't have any change but hold up, I have something else you might want" fumbled around for the banana for a second, and then tossed it to him.

And I realized I had just tossed an elderly black man a banana, in Louisiana, in lieu of money, saying "here's something you might want." And I was fucking mortified. Like, struck dumb level mortified, and I just sat there with my mouth open until he burst out laughing and walked away. And then my friend burst out laughing.
