What's the most idiotic rule you've ever been expected to abide by?

My last job was in a high street shop in a fairly working class town. We get robbed at LEAST once a day, menial things, mostly stuff under £20. But it still counts and we still have to make a big deal out of it.

You must acknowledge EVERY CUSTOMER whilst also keeping track of the entire shop floor by yourself, there's supposed to be at least 2 staff at all times (basically everywhere is a blind spot because of high shelves and displays) but my manager lets this other girl go home early -

Except this time, a guy comes in takes me to the back of the store where we keep folders, pretending to ask me about them. He's being really weird asking really specific questions, I'm trying to help whilst my managers on lunch, I feel bad for calling her down all the time asking stupid questions. So I leave her be.

Meanwhile another guy comes in, crawls behind the counter and takes our store tablet that we use for stock take, etc. Takes the security magnet (that's used to unlock more expensive items held behind tags) and takes about £300 worth of stock. We didn't even realise until my manager noticed about 2 hours later when a pair of headphones was missing and she checked the camera

So basically the rules of the shop completely contradicted themselves, leaving me helpless.
