What's something horrible you've witnessed as a child but did not completely understand, only to discover later in life how horrible it really was?

There was a high-rise apartment building behind our backyard. One night I heard a girl screaming like mad. I peeked out my bedroom window and saw a dude slamming her face first into the brick wall. Little kid me snuck downstairs and called the police. I was so terrified of getting into trouble for making a phone call in the middle of the night and not minding my own business while I was supposed to be in bed sleeping that I never even looked out the window again to see if the cops came or not. I feel like I remember hearing rumours that somebody died there but I was so scared of getting into trouble (clearly had no concept of which rule was worse to break - - face smashing or sneaking out of bed to call the cops) that I never told anybody that I saw anything or that I made the call.
