I'm a Deputy Sheriff at a county jail, you'd be amazed what people try to lie about when we're booking them in.
A couple months ago we had a guy come in for public intoxication because he fell through a display at Walmart. One of the first questions we ask in our assessment is, "Have you ever been to jail before?" And this guy says no.
Me: "Oh? You sure, because you have a file in our computer already."
Drunk: "Oh, yeah, I got a DUI, like 5 years ago in a different county but that's it." I've already scrolled through his page by now and I know he's a frequent flyer, but let's see what he thinks I'll believe.
Me: "Okay, so that was your only arrest, and it was in a different county?"
Drunk: "Yeah, that's it."
Me: "Well, when I pull up your page here I get a picture of you in our jumpsuit, holding our booking box. It's dated last March."
Drunk: "Oh, yeah, there was that... It was no big deal. But that's it."
Me: "Fair enough, we'll move on. Now, I have your address here as (State Penitentiary), is that still correct?"
Drunk: "No, uh, that's real old... I did 12 years for armed robbery way back when I was younger. I changed since then, you know. Cleaned up my act. Now I'm living in XXXXXXXX with XXXXXXXX doing XXXXXXXX."
Me: "Oh, right on, man. I'm happy to hear that. Well, let's get you changed into a jumpsuit and you can get some rest."
So I take this dude to change clothes and when he hands me his street clothes, guess what he has under his pants? Prison. Issue. Gym shorts. With his name and number sewed right onto 'em. Also, the numbers are issued sequentially and I happen to know that the one on his shorts would have been issued within the last 24 months.
A couple hours later a neighboring county called us to ask if he'd been seen around... "Yeah, actually... He's sleeping one off a few feet from me."
Neighboring county: "Oh, awesome, hang onto him in the morning. As of a couple hours ago he's a suspect in a sexual assault over here."
Naw, man, can't be. He cleaned up his act way back when he was younger.
