When did your "Something is very wrong here" feeling turned out to be true?

Me and my friends, one other guy and half a dozen girls, had been at a bar watching the superbowl. We finish up and start walking back to our university campus halls about 2am.
On the way back we grab some takeaway, and I'm stood in the doorway. Older guy asks to get past, so I move, he walks in and then walks out right away.
We get our food and leave and within maybe 300 yards walk I notice he is walking behind us.
We're coming up to a turn in the road that only leads to uni flats so I figure if he turns the same way as us I would fall to the back of the walking group and keep and ear our.
I hear him walking maybe 20 foot behind us so I am super alert to his presence.
We take another turn to the road with our flats on. There is no one above college age that lives here, just us students so when I hear him following us my hackles go right up.
We get back to our flats and we start to split up to go to our separate doors, this is when this dude approaches me from behind.
Now for context, I am a 6 foot 240 pounds guy, built and wearing a biker jacket with a big mohawk so I'd say definitely the most intimidating amongst our group of fairly dainty girls.
He's foreign (later found this out in court) and so speaks with broken English. Couldn't make out what he was saying but was gesturing to my crotch area. I took it maybe he was homeless and wanted my belt.
Now, clearly in hindsight this is a stupid assumption but I was on the spot and was taken off guard that I was the one approached.
I gesture to my belt and ask if thats what he is after. More broken English.
My friends, now all watching and seeing I am getting agitated call me and gesture me into their flat which kinda snapped me out of the moment. I go inside and half the girls head off to a flat nearby.
My friend pokes my head out the door and sees him following them but he sees this then turns and tucks tail.
It literally didn't cross my mind for a moment that this guy was trying to mug me, but we called the police and he was later found with multiple iPhones on him assumed to be stolen.

Get to court a month later to stand witness but the case is thrown out because our defence had left the CCTV evidence in another court room and I guess thats all it takes for our justice system to throw out what I would say is a clean cut & dry case against a guy who had been mugging people.
Fuck that dude, fuck the court system and fuck me for not realising I was in danger. Thank god he went for me and not one of the girls though for his sake because if I was a bystander and realised what was going on I'd have been the one standing in court.
