Where were you on September 11, 2001?

High school. Ironically in US Government class. We learned about the situation before most of the school because it was the first, and last, time the teacher let us listen to the radio while working on a group project. Teacher called the front office after hearing an announcement on the radio. Soon there was an announcement made to the entire school and classroom TV's were turned on to a news channel.

We joked "what if the pentagon" got hit about 20 mins before it happened. Being kids in an affluent DMV suburb most of your parents were fed workers and a lot of them worked in the Pentagon. The classroom went into stunned silence and then panic as we all tried to call out parents but no calls were getting through.

When they finally let us put off 1st period, kids with cars were trying to leave. The kid with a locker next to me was in shambles. His uncle was an NYC fire fighter. To see this jock who I barely ever spoke to on the ground on tears is an image seared in my brain.

They locked down the school but again kids with cars were determined to leave and we massively outnumbered staff. They couldn't stop the initial mob of scared teenagers who forced their way out.

Wild fucking day.
