There's a lot of baggage behind the idea that you won't work with a gay person because you're afraid of getting STDs. I understand her concerns about safety standards, but it's really bad optics to make the issue about "gay performers spreading STDs" instead of just focusing on the more general/less problematic issue of differing safety standards. Even if they're the same issue only one of them calls to mine gay panic concerns during the AIDS crisis, it's understandable that people would find the way she communicated those concerns as homophobic. Nothing happens in a vacuum.

Obviously it's awful she was pushes to do what she did, but her language definitely brings up very old homophobic ideas used to oppress people.
