Who are the shadiest person that you’ve met?

I actually have a really good story about this.

I met some sort of serious escaped criminal (or unlikely - political refugee) in a layover in Kuwait airport overnight. My flight was super delayed and the airline had put us overnight in the lounge. This guy was in trouble with customs and only spoke Chinese, so the security/immigration person asked me - the only Chinese person in the airport at 11 pm - to translate.

He had a one way ticket to Kuwait from Singapore and was thus detained by Kuwaiti customs which does not permit entry without a return or ongoing ticket. He only had cash, no credit cards, and a handwritten list of countries that do not require some sort of pre-arrival entry visa for Chinese nationals. Amongst which the Central African Republic was an option.

When asked about the purpose of his visit, he said he was doing some sort of last minute, "pick up and go" world tour - except no one does that with only cash and randomly considers going to the Central African Republic with no plans for no reason.

He refused to let customs send him back to Singapore on a plane. At that time of night all the ticket counters were closed and a forward ticket could only be purchased online via credit card, which he claimed not to have. He offered to give me cash if I would book a ticket for him. I declined.

Kuwaiti customs was actually super reasonable, and I genuinely tried to help him for like an hour and a half but ultimately since he didn't want to return to Singapore and could not enter Kuwait or purchase a forwarding ticket (and was obviously increasingly shady as the situation developed), they took him to jail. The only thing I could think of to do literally as he was being taken away was to look up the nearest Chinese embassy's phone number, write it down and offer it to him. He refused the paper and actually told me not to call them.

I still think about it from time to time.
