It's important to understand that the US, Russia and China are not really subject to ethics or emotional whims as some might find emotionally appealing, the dynamics between them as the rest of the world are governed by incomplete information games and very little else.

When you posit that the US must do what is ethically right you are asking them to give away an advantage or provide an adversary with an attack surface. Understand that if they do this they will not remain a relevant power for very long, which is why it will not happen.

The game theoretic dynamics between rational actors are amoral and set in stone, it is irrational actors one should be worried about (or rational actors with irrational motivations).
