A worker cuts the nose off the last Ukraine's Tupolev-22M3, know in the West as 'Backfire,' the Soviet-made strategic aircraft able to carry nuclear weapons. A total of 60 aircraft were destroyed according to the USA-Ukrainian disarmament agreement [3066 × 2085]

Ukraine had no official defensive pacts with the US or any other European countries, The Budapest Memorandum was not a defensive pact, It was a "we won't attack you" pact, Nothing in it says anything about providing help outside of a nuclear attack and even then it simply says they would talk about it to the UN.

The Sanctions and basic supplies the US did do went beyond anything in the memorandum, officially the Us didn't have to do anything and I mean they couldn't have done anything, Russia had a sizable force and their military on full alert at the time, If the Us decided to help well they would have got their asses handed to them, Which is why NATO started to build their forces back up after the events in Ukraine, NATO had no forces that could deal with a Crimea situation at that time, If russia had done the same thing in one of the baltic nations they would have got away with it.

So I mean saying Obama just rolled over, I mean what was he supposed to start a war with Russia at a time when Russia would have been able to just walk through most of eastern Europe with little resistance?
