As the world mourned Cecil the lion, five of Kenya’s endangered elephants were slain

Yknow, something like a Facebook for wild animals would not be a terrible idea. Call it Snoutbook, maybe.

You could "like" animals to follow them, and then your list of likes would slowly shrink as the animals get killed for their horns/tusks/heads.

You would sit in your room all alone, and in between masturbating to some obscure genre of pornography you would refresh your Snoutbook and think... Remember the time Elmo stuck his trunk in Joan's butt? So cute. Killed last year. And Joan had a calf with Richard, but Richard died this spring, of natural causes. The calf had to be shot after getting caught in a trap. Joan was the last of her tribe.

Now Joan's all alone, just like you. You figure, you two probably have a lot in common. At least you think so. You both have a habit of eating right before you go to sleep, for one. And you hate washing your backs. And sometimes when you wake up at 3 in the morning you go and see what she's been up to all day.

Joan does her thing. She eats grass and shits and washes in ponds and sometimes makes elephant noises but we can only wonder for whom since there's no one listening. Her habitat is getting smaller just like yours. Developers are buying everything up, the places you used to go are gone. To someone looking from the outside, it's the same as any other. A city. A savanna. But to you it's unrecognizable from just a few years ago. Money runs everything. People are in a desperate rush to survive and get a piece of something before it's all gone, beggars and billionaires, burning, clearing, stripping, looting, building something that will not stand tomorrow just so they can profit today. And you and Joan, watching it all happen.

But today after the porn session you switch to Snoutbook and see she wandered into a village and was shot trying to steal food. Bye Joan.
