She needed to pick the baby up and get him to his room for his nap. His parents were going to be home soon. She wanted to tidy up the mess in the living room before they got home. He'd taken the lid off of of his sippy cup. Great, juice on the area rug. At least some of it got on the floor instead of the rug. Had it fallen from the coffee table? Where was that lid? Toys everywhere of course. Where is he?

He's grinding goldfish crackers into the stone hearth of the fireplace. No sign of the sippy lid either, just great. She'd have to get another one from the kitchen before his nap. What was that smell? Was that him? She made a mental check-list as she went to pick him up from hearth, his onesie covered in a fine powder of orange from the crackers he'd crushed. His face was sticky with the remnants of banana and mucus. With him in her arms, she began to move towards the kitchen, moving across the area rug to the room beyond.

Suddenly is a loss of balance and she stumbles backwards, desperately trying to find some sort of balance. Her mind screams at her to stick out her arms in a desperate attempt to save herself from a fall, but her arms are full of this child that's been entrusted to her care. She fights a battle against gravity and loses. The child falls from her arms. The last thing she remembers before she loses consciousness from the blow to back of her head as it makes contact with the stone hearth is a wet smacking sound coming from not too far away. As her vision fades, although she knows that the sound is important, she can't quite think what that sound might have meant. The darkness creeps in.

It was initially thought to be a murder/suicide, a possibility which shook the community to the core as the investigation took place. Was she a frustrated baby-sitter? A suicidal teenager? In the end, it was determined that the whole incident was as simple as a girl slipping on a banana peel and a puddle of juice. Two sets of parents left devastated. Two young lives lost. An entire community in mourning. All because of a banana peel.
