It is for the people who can't afford it. I know what you're saying though. Nothing is free. Taxes pay for it.

I think your indignant attitude come's from a lack of empathy. Maybe an analogy will help alleviate some of your contempt.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a family of 50 people traveled from place to place, meeting other small tribes as they moved with the seasons. Sometimes they would meet people who were fat. Sometimes they would meet people who were starving. They would teach those who are fat different kinds of exercise. They would teach those who are starving, different methods of hunting and gathering.

One year things didn't go so well for that kind family. An elk herd they hunted annually had been decimated by an illness. Now they had begun to starve. But one of the tribes they had helped in years past saw them in the distance and went to thank them for helping them in the past. They saw this once prosperous tribe, had now become hungry. So, they fed them.

There was an individual, in the tribe that came to help, who was disgruntled because he didn't remember who these people were. He had forgotten it was they who helped his family when they were in need long ago. The village idiot came and reminded him.

The moral of the story is, the disgruntled whiner who was enlightened by the village idiot, is now the new village idiot.
