I have $20k cash to start my life over. How should I spend it.

The only part of this post that makes sense is the fact that you chose to get advice before acting on it.Real talk, the money in your bank account doesn't give a shit about your personal hobbies and passions. Fix your credit, find a shit room for rent or cheap country to live in for a few months as others in the comment section have mentioned and find someone to help you buy a good used car for $5k.

on the car situation- if you really think you can't get a good car for cheap it's because you don't know how to buy a car. Go find someone who's good at buying cars and have them help you.

Regarding collections - sometimes you can negotiate with collections. Tell them you can't afford the $2,000 but see if they will settle the debt for less. This happens a lot, and many people get screwed into paying the full amount thinking that they can't negotiate it. Escalate to a manager if you have to.

Groceries / Gas / Phone will not cost you $5000 over 3 months if you aren't commuting for work during that time. Learn to eat healthy and cheap. There's an entire subreddit dedicated to this
