The adderall shortage is insane!

Yes, it's nuts. That said, it's not surprisingly in the least. Demand for this drug has increased substantially over the past few years. The pandemic largely played into it. I think a lot of it is that people feel distracted, went online, and got some ADHD 'diagnosis' from some sketchy online clinic and were given an Adderall script. If you read into this stuff, it's absolutely wild. Many pharmacies no longer accept scripts from those ADHD 'shops' online. In addition to this, many parents probably felt their kid had ADHD, because they couldn't sit in front of an iPad/laptop for 8 hours at home without going nuts. This is not ADHD. This is what we would call normal human behavior. But, in today's fast-paced, lets-fix-everything-with-a-pill world, thousands of kids per month were newly diagnosed with ADHD.

ADHD is a very real thing, and the right dose of the right medication can be hugely helpful. But I believe diagnosis of such a complex disorder takes time, and it can't be done online in 10 minutes. It requires the careful study and diagnosis of a licensed and qualified health care professional, in conjunction with family, or teachers, etc.

At any rate, another major factor here is that the stimulants, including amphetamine salts, are controlled substances (CII). Because of this, the DEA sets ceilings on how much of the drug can be manufactured. It's not like the companies can just pull a lever, and the Adderall machine pumps out more. It is a very, very carefully monitored process that has reporting points to federal authorities at many stages of production.

Finally, while amphetamine is relatively simple (i.e., cheap) molecule to manufacture, like everything else in the market, over the past few years, the price of precursor chemicals has gone up. This is due to both demand, as well as supply chain issues. Because amphetamine is by it's nature a cheap drug to make, it means that the margins are already quite thin. So, a small increase in price of a precursor, or even a step in production (transportation, for instance), means that the drug companies profit margin is compressed. ADHD is very real, but we must acknowledge that, at the end of the day, it is also largely a business. If these companies cannot meet demand, and it becomes more expensive to sustain production, you are left with what is essentially perpetual manufacturing shortages. Hopefully, over the next few months, it is resolved. But I think it will take a while. It may be worth trying another medication. There are many other alternatives, and frankly, Adderall isn't for everyone. It is a very intense drug. I have heard many do better on something like Dexedrine, Vyvanse, or the methylphenidate family. Best of luck!
