I get both. Love a medium rare steak myself. And when you get gourmet cuts like that it gets expensive fast. Working in hospitality for over a decade, I can attest, you lose flavor.

But I understand her feel her family isn’t as important because the cost output isn’t the same. That likely makes her feel her family is less important, and by perhaps unconscious extension, her hopes or wants are less important/less worthy of higher costs.

A good compromise, spend that extra money you would have spent on steaks on something extra for them, that they might really appreciate and enjoy more. A certain outing/event with them or perhaps a fancy dessert. Then it’s more about catering to peoples preferences rather than valuing them differently.
