This sounds like a gal (OP) having no real practical experience with others not like her, and waking up to the harsh learning curve of reality smacking her in the face by losing friends over her naivety in relation to the world. The population of the entire state on Montana is lower than many metro areas and only has 1 area code for phones, spread out over lots and lots and lots of space. That means lots of really small towns and not many 'other' types of people in places with populations of 200-600. Many small towns struggle to provide high speed internet or even cable as well in places where it's that rural.

Hopefully OP learns from this whole experience, as she was definitely TA here, but not for the standard reasons of intentionally being a jerk. That doesn't make her any less of an asshole here, or excuse her behavior as those were real people she hurt, but she can hopefully learn from this and be better going forward.
