Unless you are suicidal or homicidal then, with a few caveats, Mental Health will not have any impact on your clearance and PCS. Yes, there are outliers. Yes, there are circumstances that will change that, but overall it will not.

Case; I have been seeing mental health since late 2013/early 14. I am diagnosed with major depressive disorder and back in late 2013 almost shot myself. I have a TS and an active SCI. I PCS’d in 2016. I am currently at a Green Door that required a poly and a 422 be completed (medical clearance). I just got approved Palace Chase (which also required a new 422), I got approved retraining (again… 422), and I got offered a job in the world of the Alphabet Bois. Mental Health did not affect any of this.

If you are seeing Mental Health and they determine at the time of your PCS that you need continued care then its as easy as a phone call to the gaining bases clinic to do a handoff and setting you up an appointment before you PCS. If you’re PCSing or Deploying to a place with no treatment facilities then it may be a no go, but I was able to deploy while needing services, maintained my weapon and conducted my appointments over a VTC.

If you start or change your medication that changes things. You are put on a 30 (or was it 90) day mobility restriction. Basically, you cannot leave the base for PCS/TDY. It is to make sure you are handling the medication and the dosage they gave you. Once you are on a stable medication that restriction goes away. Come PCS they will give you enough medication to make it to the above mentioned appointment.

When it comes to clearances, it doesn’t affect them. Being depressed is not a disqualifying factor. I know people who are diagnosed bipolar and maintained their clearances as well. As long as you’ve not got something like multiple personality disorder or schizophrenia then you’re good. And if you do, go see them anyway because you need the help!

Just… go get help.
