One of my favorite scenes. The look on Shiv's face when Caroline says "I probably never should have had children", just anger underscored by deep sadness.

In my mind, Shiv has always been taught that femininity=vulnerability=weakness, and she never really had a mother figure to look up to. Caroline was never around and didn't care about her, Marcia obviously dislikes Shiv and there's no warmth between them. The closest woman to Shiv is probably Gerri, and most of their interactions are business-related. She doesn't really have friends, she only hangs out with men like Tom, Nate, and her male family members - there's that awkward scene where she kind of invites herself to Willa's afterparty only to leave with a guy shortly after.

As a woman with an absent mother and a distant stepmother, it just hits home so hard. Feeling like you have to "toughen up" and distance yourself from any vulnerability to avoid getting hurt.
