I always used to refer to it as the "luminiferous aether" which I thought rather witty at the time* -- unfortunately recently people think I'm talking about "ethereum" -- which is still rather ironically funny when you think about it.

* Especially given that to truly take advantage of it one needed a "fiber" connection -- but I'm certain the implication of that part of the "witticism" just went "whoosh" waaaaaaay over most people's heads.
