April 13 USAREC OCS selection board results...

Nothing too special, I'll run down a few things though:

  • Of my letters of rec. all knew me 10+ years, one was my university president, the other an Army civilian employee, and another a Lt. Comm in the Navy.

  • PT was 256, with 80% or better in run and push ups and 90% in sit ups.

  • AFQT 92, GT 127

  • 3.3 GPA

  • I've been an English teacher for the last several years, many said my essay was exceptionally good.

  • At my Battalion board I earned 74 of 75 points and the Officers wrote some great things about me. My board was a little different and they tried to stump me on international affairs, global politics and such. Little did they know, that's my bread a butter.

I had some negatives going for me too though

  • Had to redo my medical because I had high blood pressure for a while which was noted on my forms. I was on rittalin for ADD as a kid as well.

  • There were issues with my initial security check, one security interviewer thought I wouldn't clear, another one did clear me though.

  • I'm 31 and was about 6 months shy of needing an age waiver.

  • My degree is in Business, not STEM (which are preferred these days.)

  • I've lived abroad for the last 8 years

The best advice I can give is:

  • If you're still in school, get your GPA up as high as you can. 3.5 would be great.

  • PT is free and it's good for you and me. Seriously though, run a lot and shoot for the highest score you can get.

  • Practice interviews. The Battalion Board is like a real world job interview on steroids. Mine was an hour and half long. Know the Army values, speak with confidence, try to be well-versed on current events, and sit up straight and look them in the eye.
