But to your second point, that's my point, so do Americans about Americans. But the OP is about when the point of racial identification comes up. And this argument of yours (seemingly, excuse me if I'm misrepresenting), is that it shouldn't come up. I'm saying that that is a dodge of the question, because the context of the question is when race does come up. I also agree that it shouldn't come up in every day life, or be some point of contention.

But then when the topic of race does come up I support the term "black people" over "african american", unless a specific person prefers a different term. And I did say that in the original post.
