Why are pronouns so important to some people?

Related tangent: “they” as a singular pronoun is less than ideal especially in writing.

Remember when Ezra Miller reminded the world why putting Ezra Miller in movies is a bad idea?

Comments like “why has he not been arrested yet?” instead read “why has they not been arrested yet?” This phrasing while respecting an individual’s identity, is both clunky and stupid sounding.

However if written “why have they not been arrested yet?“ it sounds like someone else was assisting Ezra’s crime spree and both of them are on the loose.

My point is that English is not particularly well equipped to handle they/them referring to a single person. We could really use a gender neutral singular pronoun that can be used in place of he/she and his/her.
