Beaten, abused, humiliated and filmed by Victoria Police

NSW cop here, as much as I agree that the officers in the video should be fired, this is a stupid comment, and every time one of these threads comes up equally stupid comments are posted.

Yes, police accused of wrongdoing of a certain level of seriousness are placed on leave with pay. Do you think this is unfair? Let's say you are a police officer doing your job and your ex partner makes a complaint that you sexually assaulted them. While this matter is investigated (because these things take time) should you be left with nothing? If the complaint is found to be truthful, then you should be dealt with under the law, and society can sleep easier knowing that not only have you been dealt with fairly and legally, but that they didn't make you suffer unduly when your guilt wasn't proven.

Let's say the complaint isn't founded, but you are suspended without pay. You're not earning for the weeks to months it takes to investigate. How do you support yourself then? You won't be eligible for centrelink. Police experience and qualifications aren't relevant in many other jobs, so it would be difficult to continue paying the mortgage etc. You are already being punished for something that may or may not be true. Hardly innocent til proven guilty.
