Being a step-dad is one of the hardest things I've done

I will say as a nanny I was always able to take kids to the doctor for sick visits and checkups and make the appointments and pick up the prescriptions. I’ve always been able to do everything the parents could do. I was led to believe the only time there are parental consent issues are in the emergency room and I had legal papers signed always in the car with me saying if there is an emergency situation this person can make all medical decisions for our child.

My mom was a step mom and because she and my dad had full custody, my half sisters birth mom wasn’t even allowed to do things like pick them up without permission.

I’d say this is an issue with the pediatricians office and the school. I’d make a whole big deal about it and be like I’m this child’s legal guardian, and my wife and I would love to meet with you and go over our expectations if there is going to be any future issue. In fact you have the right to say “If my children ever visit with their father, I need to be notified immediately”
