Do you believe we are in the midst of a culture war?

To tie in your original question, I tend to see traits of the first ideology you've postulated happening around us, not only in the US. The immigration debate is certainly a major issue, both in the US and beyond. We're seeing a very alarming propagation of far right ideology happening on a global scale. We're seeing nationalistic rhetoric in increasing frequency at occurring at increasingly higher levels of government. I hesitate to call it a war at this very moment, but certainly there are major culture clashes happening on a global scale.

We've seen this fermenting in Russia over the last decade with increasing backlash against migrants, foreigners and those who are "different" (alternative lifestyles, etc.), hell Putin has tapped into the Russian church to cement a new 'Russian' identity. We're seeing this happen in Germany and various Nordic countries in regards to the Syrian refugee crisis. Look at the concert attacks in France, look at Belgium being locked down earlier this year due to the same group... I'd be a moron if I didn't admit negative sentiment against certain groups is beyond heightened. But, culture war? I don't know yet.

To me, the Obama administration has taken the most logical road to combat this sentiment domestically. The distinction Obama has placed between ordinary Muslims and extremists and the careful phrasing of the administration's rhetoric when condemning terrorism illustrates attempts to quell this sentiment. There is a distinct us vs. them mentality happening now and the rising popularity of some blustering firebrand who strokes this nerve is evidence enough that it is a very real sentiment. And it has shown to be a pop

And this doesn't even touch upon the current climate of race relations within the US.

To solve it? If I only knew.
