Bernie on forgiving student debt: “My view is if the United States Congress can bail out the crooks on Wall Street who destroyed this economy … we could help save a millennial generation and cancel those debts.”

I can see your point about my statement sounding selfish - I would say more bitter than selfish.

What bothers me is risk. I thought I had made the right choice to reduce risk for my family. But the people that took the risk and failed are still being rewarded. It's reminiscent of the recent financial crisis - those that took risk were bailed out. Most of the loans were taken by liberal arts students: psychology, history, political science majors, etc. There aren't too many STEM majors complaining about their ability to pay back their loans.

For things like health insurance, we need a single payer system because we can't control our risk. We can't tell who is going to develop cancer or who is going to need an operation. So, we make a single payer system for everyone to benefit. This makes sense, doesn't it? So, why not have a similar system for education? Everyone gets free education, at least through tertiary schooling? Why is that not better than debt relief?
