my grandmother was born in 1952. She was mugged on a walk home from high school and her mother told her to keep her mouth shut about what happened so "no one would expect something dirty happened to her." When leaving for her first date as a teen, her mother told her "make sure you keep your legs closed." when she became pregnant with her boyfriend at 17, they married, because you had to, and when that marriage ended in divorce (I applaud her for actually following through with it instead of sticking out a hateful marriage) when she was 19, her parents moved across the state, told her she was not welcome to come, and proceeded to not speak to her and refer badly to her for years and years to come.
