Breer: NFL “Intrigued” By Tom Herman As Potential Head Coach

The fundamental spread concepts are still a good idea. The majority of NFL teams use spread sets occasionally & the majority of snaps taken are now out of the shotgun.

The problems with college spread offenses in the NFL are:

  1. There isn't an advantage in simplifying down the offense. The main advantage in college of doing this because it's easy for a young QB to learn. The problem in the NFL is that defensive players and coordinators are experienced enough to take advantage of a simple offense.

  2. You need an overwhelming talent advantage to make good use of the smaller windows the offense opens up in the NFL. That's why the Patriots ran so many spread sets in 2007.

  3. You can't run sets like Briles did at Baylor with the receivers spread out completely to the edges of the field. NFL corners will get pick 6s from that.

  4. Defensive line play is at a higher level than the offensive line. If you run wide splits & a 2 point stance you're going to get blown up more often than not, especially if you're trying to run the ball. You just give up too many advantages.

  5. Your quarterback will get killed if you try to take advantage of the numbers game and run him often. You don't get to move onto new QBs in the NFL like you do in college.

There's still a place for the spread in the NFL, just not an unmodified college offense. I think Herman's a pretty smart guy, so he wouldn't do that.
