Buying your child a car

To me, it comes down to what else the kid could be doing besides working to pay for the car. If they would be taking summer classes, studying for the SAT, and volunteering, etc. (something towards their long-term future like help get a college scholarship) then I would pay for it. If they’re just gonna be playing video games otherwise and hanging out, then work experience would do them some long-term good and they can help pay for their own vehicle.

I got a used and very embarrassing piece of shit starter car from working part time for my parents. I had nothing better to do over that summer. My kids have always had something better to do over summers, so they got a very old and embarrassing vehicle to start with. It’s less embarrassing than what I started with but still embarrassing and in poor enough shape that anything they buy with their own money someday will be an upgrade.

Some minister we knew about bought his daughter a new BMW when she turned 16, and I have very strong feelings against that kind of thing for multiple reasons. I don’t even think that’s good for the kid.
