"You can survive in a one bed room apartment on diet of rice, milk, and beans."

This exchange isn't too bad but still kinda shitty to berate someone because they bought a nice outfit with their tax return.

Like a lot of people I know on food stamps, you make bad financial choices.

Really? Why? Because I saved for something I really wanted?

You listed several luxury items you have and said you dress nice. That sounds like a lifestyle, not one thing you saved up for. And if you get food stamps, you're basically saying you can't support yourself without help. It's there, and if you meet the income requirements, you're well within your rights to take advantage of it. But if you can afford that stuff, I'm pretty sure you could manage to pay for your own food if you made better choices. I've been in a position where I relied on a bridge card and I felt guilty for every nonessential purchase I made. I've noticed that some people don't have a problem with it. If they're eligible, they take the help even if they could get by without it. I felt a little shame that I needed help and it seems weird to me that other people don't.

This one is pretty mean sipirited. What if we make the world a better place for nothing?

For all those godamn bleeding hearts on the thread, do you really think welfare abuse doesnt happen?! You go on and on about how bankers and politicians abuse the system and ruin the economy, and fuck the 1%, and so on, yet you refuse to believe that on the other end of the spectrum, deadbeats abuse social assistance. Get your heads out of the sand.

Typical they're not really poor fear mongering

I saw a chick like that too at the market. Paid with food stamps. Then loaded all her groceries into her Audi.

More of the same.

I work at HEB (Texas Grocery) 90% of the people who use food stamps or WIC (Women infants children food) have smart phones, and separate their beer and cigarettes to pay for them separately with credit card. 85 to 90% of them are either African American or Hispanic and, from my experience, 70% of them are obese. 50% percent of the time they purchase name brand junk food, candy, energy drinks, and other non-nutritious food. The majority of these people are not starving and possess the wealth to amply feed themselves. These people are the reason 60$ or more come out of my small paycheck if you use food stamps and you don't look hungry I automatically assume you have an extremely low IQ and of the worst sort of people on the planet. Did I mention that these people get 700$ a MONTH for food. My family of seven spends 500$ a month and we pay for it ourselves because we have jobs. Their is no reason that these people cannot get jobs im 17 and make 9$ and hour and, if I worked full time could live on my own supporting another person.

Same person as the above comment trying to convince us they're not just selfish and angry.

Furthermore, I was a democratic liberal before I worked in the grocery business then I saw what kind of people abuse government assistance. It is ridiculous that work my ass off for a paycheck that is 70 dollars short because other people refuse to pay for their groceries. I donate my money often, but it is infuriating that people who can pay for these things themselves refuse to and would rather be a detriment to society.

And of course the old "I have it worse there for fuck you"

My personal case: girl in front of me at a grocery store line had a huge fancy looking coat, a Blackberry that I could see she was using data package with, brand name boots (forgot the brand), buying Oreos and some other snacky food, and then pays with food stamps. Meanwhile I was in my super worn jeans I bought used for $5, a hoodie my friend didn't want, buying pasta, bread, eggs, milk, peanut butter, and my splurge item of pistachio nuts (they are super expensive but I love them) with cash I make at my minimum wage job working through college (parents saved a long time for my tuition thankfully, I love them)

All these comments were from one thread. Not all of them were positive but a few of them were. I'm sure you could find more if you looked.
