Why do Chinese companies tend to use standardized, international parts whereas US companies tend to use silly "old style" parts measured in inches and ounces?

So I know this will probably be downvoted and flamed by angry Americans, but whatever.

Here in Australia, I've heard stories of businesses or consumers who are, all other things equal, more reluctant to buy things from US companies (machinery, components, etc) because of worries relating to standardization, availability of spares, training issues, and so on.

Compared to buying things from Asia or Europe, where we can be confident that things are generally standardized and universal.

Businesses don't want to get on the phone to the manufacturer and have them speak 17th century gobbledegook with some American rattling on about inches, yards, and fluid ounces.
