Chip Caray-isms

Ok, will preface this by identifying myself (in true WSB 750 Braves pre-game show terminology) as a longtime reader, first time poster to the Braves sub.

I grew up listening to Skip and Pete, or Don and Joe every night on the radio on WSB 750 as I fell asleep. I mention both pairs because I believe they switched TV/radio crews after the fifth inning. But I digress.

Fast forward twenty years. I’ve lived outside the Atlanta area for all twenty, and overseas for the past twelve years (not in the military, not a missionary), but I still listen to or watch many/mostBraves games, watch highlights, and follow the team closely.

So here it is: Skip Caray is not a good broadcaster. He gets the count wrong. He gets the batter wrong. He gets the number of outs wrong. Very basic, very fundamental things. He’s objectively not good. Even so many of the “good” things you guys have mentioned above are just examples of him recycling his dad’s lines because he knows it plays to the demographic of anyone who watched or listened to the 80s/90s Braves.

I have some sympathy for Chip because I think he got involved in the industry as a result of his last name. But at the end of the day he called a very mediocre game at best, inattentive at worst, and then got on a plane and flew home to Florida. There’s a reason he’s never worked for an MLB franchise that didn’t previously employ his father/grandfather.

Nice guy, but it’s not like we just lost Vin Scully.
