CMV: Attacking white people with the claim of being privileged is, at its core, racist.

My primary goal was to demonstrate that a) just because a minority succeeds in a dominant culture doesn't mean that being born into it culture doesn't have it's advantages and b) there's nothing racist about pointing that out.

I was born in raised in Canada. And there's plenty of other Asian and Black people that have been born and raised in America that do not enjoy "American Born Privilege" the way White people do.

For example, people always seem to point to the entrepreneurship and industriousness of Asians as some kind of proof that racism is a mythical or nullified — without realizing that most my parent's generation (I'm Asian) had to start their own small businesses, because 'American' businesses simply wouldn't hire them for anything other than menial work, regardless of their education. Do you think it's every Chinese immigrants dream to work 70 hours a week running a convenience store, laundry mat or dry cleaning service? Seriously, those are examples of Asians succeeding in spite of being marginalized by a dominant white culture, not proof of a dominant culture's non-existence.

If a person in a wheelchair becomes a paraolympian, does that suddenly mean that the society isn't designed to accommodate almost exclusively healthier, non-disabled people? If a woman with a masectomy is featured topless on the cover of Elle, does that mean that the world suddenly no longer favors hyper-sexual, busty women?

If the whole basis of the OP's belief is a few outliers like Oprah and Obama, than that should be enough to change his view right there. That of course doesn't even factor in that despite Obama's education, demeanor, and White upbringing — all of which put him in the position to assimilate into White Culture seamlessly — Obama still faces attacks on the legitimacy of his presidency (and citizenship!) on a regular basis. He's reminded that he is Black incessantly, and carries the burden of representing the Black community as well as America.

The concept of what is Beautiful, Ideal and Normal are defined by the dominant culture. And while it has become more diverse in recent years (big butts are a thing, apparently), it's pretty much been determined by whatever WASP culture validates, since America's inception.

Is it racist to acknowledge that? No. It’s just pointing out the obvious dominance of one culture over all others. There's a reason why you rarely seen an Asian leading man on television, or why SNL has had a small handful of Black cast members in 40-plus years, or why Black Women spend thousands of dollars straightening their hair, or why there is no black characters in Lord of the Rings, the Chronicle of Narnia, etc.

White is considered baseline normal — and everything outside that normal is limited by White culture. Not having to be reminded of that is an aspect of White Privilege.
