CMV: The president can pardon himself

Carter’s pardon was for anyone convicted of draft dodging. And it was at the beginning of his presidency so if anyone contested it he could just do it again. Nobody contested it, so we do not actually know if it was constitutional. The SCOTUS doesn’t just rule on these things on their own.

Trump wants to issue himself a pardon for all crimes, since he doesn’t know which crimes he will be convicted of. And it will be at the very end of his presidency so the idea that he can reissue if it is contested is out.

And, again, there is no reason to believe that the framers saw the pardon power, intended as a check against the judiciary as an ‘immunity’ power. If they did they would have said that. Nowhere does it say that the president can grant immunity to future convictions.

That’s trump and the banana republicans attempting to create a new power
