communism essay

You don't consider the seizure of all private property by the government to be drastic?

I don't really think high taxes and strong unions is drastic. What is drastic would be the capitalists engaging in open violence to suppress the democratic will. A decent movement doesn't fire the first shot.

People who own one home don't want it seized by the government either, I promise you that.

A singular house that you reside in is personal property. People won't be losing that.

We already have laws predicated on a democratic process, do you consider them to be fair?

I consider the system itself, as written, to be ok. The problem is that the system of economic despotism we live under greatly skews the behaviour of voters and politicians.

That's why there needs to be a realistic solution at the end of the tunnel. Not just utopian fantasies.

A "solution" would be a utopia. History is more of a process.

I'm not of the opinion that private property can be realistically abolished right now; what I am advocating for is initial simple reforms that strengthen labour now. Healthcare, housing, immigration and labour law all have popular reforms that can still be done within the capitalist framework. If the movement fizzles out after that it will still have materially improved the world even if capitalism itself persists.

There absolutely is a distinction. Does Bezos enact legislation or control the military? Does Trump control a chunk of businesses used by Americans in their every day lives? Imagine if either of those were true, how much worse off we'd all be.

Bezos doesn't individually control legislation or control the military but as a class capitalists do. The US has literally invaded countries to protect business interests in those nations.
