‘I couldn’t breathe’: Actor Lucy DeCoutere tells trial Jian Ghomeshi hit her, choked her

Lets break down some parts of her testimony without the fact that she gained 25 times as many followers on twitter (1000 to 25000 overnight) and was given acting roles because of her new found fame...

On her allegations:

You’re supposed to spend the rest of the weekend with him, but you had the opportunity to tell him you were feeling sick, that you can’t go out, but you didn’t, Henein says. So you’re attending all these events because you’re polite. So that was the way you dealt with it, Henein says. There’s a brunch and an art show, you don’t go with him but he’s there. And you had dinner. And you go to the barbeque with him, Henein says. But you’re again trying to make sure he doesn’t feel like a bad host, you don’t want to be rude.

Yea, it was a great barbeque,” DeCoutere says With the man who assaulted you? Henein says “I had mixed feelings,” DeCoutere says

On communicating with the other complainants:

Henein: Do you remember one of the things you said to the other complainants is that you were excited for court because it was theatre at its best? DeCoutere: Yes But you told your friend, “I want him fucking decimated,” Henein says. I speak in hyperbole, DeCoutere says.

After the first witness is accused of lying to police she contacts the crown to change her story:

Henein: I’m going to suggest that you are aware that you know that on Tuesday at 6 p.m. your lawyer called the Crown attorney… and you’re aware I’m going to suggest to you that she asked the Crown about post-assault contact, and for the very first time, your lawyer asks the Crown if there were some other interactions, would the Crown like to know about that. I’m going to suggest to you that on the eve of the trial the very first time this call gets made is when you are worried the defence may have these emails.

DeCoutere says she didn’t know her role in disclosing information to the Crown.

Henein: Is the thing you have not disclosed is some after the fact communication?

DeCoutere: I was not informed of the process

Henein: I just want to get your explanation under oath: Is what you haven’t disclosed just some casual after the fact contact?

“I wasn’t aware of the fact that I was not going to be interviewed by the Crown that I could disclose this information … I didn’t know that that was to be disclosed during my first interview (with police) …” Henein: Do you want to tell his honour the real conversation that was going on?

Cross-examination will continue tomorrow.
