[Crowdsource] How to Compliment Women Without Causing Offense

The wage gap can be addressed by, for example, laws like the equal pay act and complaints and/or legal action that people can bring against employers if they find out they're being underpaid relative to colleagues with similar experience and duties.

Quite rarely these days. Most employers don't pay men and women different wages for the exact same position and hours, so legislation cannot fix most of the remaining gap. It comes from factors like barriers into certain professions, bias in competitions for promotions and salary negotiations, and men's ability to work more hours and odd hours due to slacking off on home responsibilities. These are things that cannot be easily legislated away by discrimination laws/legal action, requiring more difficult solutions.

That's why I haven't accused you of it. But it's certainly a risk of becoming fixated on the wrong things.

You don't assume women will get bitter and start hating men just by acknowledging inequalities such as the wage gap. We trust most have the emotional maturity to process and accept news of inequality, even be frustrated about it, without it polluting every other aspect of their social lives. Why should this situation be any different?

You're in this as an individual, not as a statistical population.

The same can be said of any race, gender, or other inequality. Sure, there are some black men richer than most white men (Obama), and some women richer than most men. But acknowledging the imbalance at least makes one aware of societal barriers and obstacles when trying to succeed.
