Dead/forgotten rivalries for your team where the leading team is now irrelevant.

BC currently holds a 48-31-3 over Holy Cross. That's right, 82 games vs. Holy Cross. The series started in 1896 and was played almost every year up until 1986. During the beginning of the century, it was one of the biggest football events in New England, and the game was moved to the Braves Field and then Fenway Park on many occasions to accommodate the ticket demand.

The most notable game was in 1942, when BC was riding an undefeated season heading into the final game vs. the Crusaders, and Holy Cross upset BC 55-12. BC was expecting to win big and get an invitation to the Sugar Bowl. What's most notable is that after losing the game, BC cancelled their celebration party with the Sugar Bowl officials at a club called Coconut Grove. That night, Coconut Grove caught fire, and almost 500 people died. It was the deadliest nightclub fire in history, and the BC team (and Sugar Bowl officials) would have been caught up in it if not for the unexpected loss.

By 1986, the divergence of the two schools had become apparent. After being a true 50/50 rivalry from its inception to the 1960s, BC had gone something like 18-2 from 1967 on. After 1986 Holy Cross dropped down to 1AA (now FCS), and the two teams haven't played since.....until 2018 when the rivalry will spark up again for the first time in 30 years!

Being a northeastern school with a program that started in the 19th century, BC has some other notable rivalries that are no longer relevant in addition to the Holy Cross series. Notable ones of over 20 games include:

  • 30-15-1 record over Villanova
  • 27-5-1 record over BU
  • 14-11-2 record over Fordham
