Why did you become atheist/agnostic and not a regular christian?

I tried to stay a Christian for a while after leaving the church, but then I started studying the historicity of the Old and New Testament and came to the conclusion that Christianity isn't any more likely to be true than other world religions. Reading Bart Ehrman was a definite turning point for me.

I still deeply appreciate the things Jesus taught, but instead of seeing him as God incarnate and our Savior, I see him as a wise preacher whom people started worshipping over time.

The idea of an interventionist God fell apart for me when studied the problem of evil and failed to find a satisfying theodicy. I realized this after when Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov. I can't reconcile the state of the world with the existence of an omnipotent and benevolent God.

I'm not an atheist; I would currently describe myself as a kind of pantheist/monist, although I'm still figuring everything out. I believe there is a unity to the universe, that we are one with the universe and nature, and there's a kind of divinity all around us as well as within us. Taoist philosophy especially resonates with me.
