How come black people from the US are called African Americans but white people from the US aren’t called European Americans?

My dad tells me that blacks are ashamed to talk about Africa as their ancestry as there really is no concrete and clear history that has done great things, mostly kings fighting and being greedy. The reason why blacks in America latch onto Egypt or Carthage is because those were eloquent societies that made marks in history and contributed to modern day society. Even though they clearly were Mediterranean /"White" (and all TV and media about Egypt tends to focus on Ptolemy Era who were Greek)

That's why my whole life some random black islander will ask me some dumb as question like "you from Barbados?" Or some random island to say that's how they act over there and then proceed to tell me how they are from Antigua like I give a fuck
