Does being sick impair the body’s ability to form memories during that time?

Are we allowed to comment here with personal stories? My mom, late 40s or early 50s came down really sick from intense work related stress and had a bad UTI or kidney infection, we think. She remembers nothing of those weeks, it’s like they never happened for her. We would say something to her and she didn’t remember it 30 seconds later and it was almost like she just couldn’t understand what we were saying. Really spooky. It’s been well over a decade and she has no signs of Alzheimer’s or dementia and recovered fine. The only long term affect that might not even have been from that is that her pupils are always small. In hindsight, we should have brought her to the hospital but we were ill prepared teens and never experienced any illnesses before.
