Donald Trump falsely says there's 'never' been so many border apprehensions

Seems to me that his base really wouldn't care all that much if Trump were unable to get a wall funded. We're talking about a base that's so far been able to, with relative ease, find someone or something to blame for virtually everything Trump has done that's netted him negative criticism. Even the man himself recognizes that he could "shoot somebody" and "not lose any voters". Why all of a sudden is there fear that he could fail to fund a wall and lose voters?? I'm with Trump here: this dumbass could go on national television and declare that the sky was purple and his base would cheer in approval.

So why does he have to fund a wall or risk losing support in 2020? Hell, he's already pretty much given up on getting Mexico to pay for it and nobody seems to give a shit about that. Seems to me that there's something about the actual act of funding and building a wall that Trump cares about here. Or maybe it's nothing to do with the wall at all and it's centered around the shutdown itself. I'm not entirely sure what's at play here, but I don't think his base and fears about re-election are the real reasons behind this sudden, desperate obsession with a border wall.
